General description
The Broadcom® HCPL-7840 isolation amplifier family isdesigned for current sensing in electronic motor drives. In atypical implementation, motor currents flow through anexternal resistor and the resulting analog voltage drop issensed by the HCPL-7840. A differential output voltage iscreated on the other side of the HCPL-7840 optical isolationbarrier. This differential output voltage is proportional to themotor current and can be converted to a single-ended signalby using an op-amp as shown in the recommendedapplication circuit. Since common-mode voltage swings ofseveral hundred volts in tens of nanoseconds are commonin modern switching inverter motor drives, the HCPL-7840was designed to ignore very high common-mode transientslew rates (of at least 10 kV/μs).The high CMR capability of the HCPL-7840 isolationamplifier provides the precision and stability needed toaccurately monitor motor current in high noise motor controlenvironments, providing for smoother control (less torqueripple) in various types of motor control applications.
